What to know about The Princess Theatre
Designed by architect John Beauchamp Nicholson and opened in 1888, the Princess is Brisbane’s oldest surviving theatre and is heritage-listed. It was converted to a cinema in 1912 and had several lives over the following century before a careful restoration reopened it to the public in 2021 as a live performance venue. The result is a high, intimate hall that works for about 900 standing or 500 seated. Its programming leans adventurous: in 2027 the confirmed list runs from Carpenter Brut and Propagandhi to Osees, The Milk Carton Kids, The Longest Johns, Slava Vakarchuk and death-metal veterans Carcass. Comedy and seated concerts also feature, so the room’s configuration changes from night to night.
Getting to The Princess Theatre
The theatre stands at 8 Annerley Road in Woolloongabba, just south of the Mater hospitals. South Brisbane and Park Road stations are each about a ten to fifteen minute walk, and the Mater Hill busway station is close by. From the CBD, buses towards Annerley and the southern suburbs pass the door. Street parking in the surrounding streets is tight and often restricted because of the hospitals, so public transport or rideshare is the simpler option. If you are coming from a Gabba match or a South Bank dinner, the theatre is close enough to walk in a few minutes.
Before your The Princess Theatre concert
Check whether your show is seated or standing, since the room is configured both ways. For standing gigs, the sound is well balanced from the middle of the floor. Woolloongabba’s Logan Road and Stanley Street have plenty of places to eat within walking distance. The theatre is compact, so even the back of the room is close to the stage, but popular nights can sell out at this capacity.
